Wilson Estate Vineyards is proud to announce John Sauvé as the new Art Director of the estate and the Artistic Director of The King’s Men, the Midwest’s newest Shakespearean theatre company. Sauvé was selected after a nine-month global search and brings with him more than four decades of experience as an artist, curator, and director. His career spans public art leadership across Michigan and internationally recognized creative work, making him uniquely suited to guide this ambitious new chapter at the Wilson Estate.
“Sauvé is widely regarded for his artistic leadership,” said Wilson Estate founder Jerry Wilson. “He was chosen because of his artistic excellence and his proven ability to conceptualize and curate bold, energetic, and innovative programs. Over the past forty years, he has directed numerous productions that will serve him well in the creation of The King’s Men.”
Beginning January 1, 2026, Sauvé will work alongside the Wilson Estate artistic team to develop the inaugural 2026–2027 season. While continuing his directorial commitments elsewhere—including a forthcoming production of Hamlet—he is already shaping what The King’s Men will become at Wilson Estate Vineyards: Shakespeare performed in a way that feels immediate, human, and inviting.
For guests who may be new to live theater, especially in a vineyard setting, this experience is designed to be welcoming and approachable. A custom-built stage will rise among the vines, creating an intimate outdoor performance space where audiences are close to the actors and fully engaged in the story. There’s no need to know Shakespeare beforehand—these productions focus on emotion, movement, and storytelling that resonates whether it’s your first play or your fiftieth. The natural surroundings, of the vineyard and the closeness of the performance will make the experience feel personal and alive.
“It’s important to me and to John that his debut season is his own, rather than one he inherits,” Wilson added. “He has some amazing ideas, and I’m looking forward to supporting him in any way I can to help him achieve his vision.”
Under John Sauvé’s leadership, The King’s Men will transform Wilson Estate Vineyards into a place where wine, landscape, and live performance come together. These productions are not about formality—they’re about connection, shared experience, and rediscovering classic stories in a setting that feels both grounded and inspired. We look forward to welcoming our community and visitors to the vineyard as the stage lights rise on this exciting new venture.
