Every once in a while, you have to step outside your own vineyard to see what’s happening across Michigan’s ever-growing wine scene. That’s exactly what Sabrina Dailey and I set out to do on our recent research and development trip to the Traverse Wine Coast—a breathtaking region that includes Traverse City, Old Mission Peninsula, and the Leelanau Peninsula.
We took a helicopter ride north for the day, flying over the rolling hills, orchards, and sparkling waters of Grand Traverse Bay. Seeing the landscape from above gives you a whole new appreciation for the terroir that makes northern Michigan wines so distinctive.
Our first stop was Chateau Chantal, where elegance meets tradition. Their panoramic vineyard views and refined hospitality were nothing short of inspiring. Next, we stopped at Bonobo Winery, where modern design and relaxed atmosphere come together perfectly—a great reminder that wine is as much about the experience as it is about the glass.
Finally, we visited Peninsula Cellars, a charming, family-run winery located in a restored one-room schoolhouse. It’s a place rich in history and authenticity—proof that great wine comes from passion, patience, and staying true to your roots.
Trips like this are invaluable for us at Wilson Estate Vineyards. They remind us that Michigan has a vibrant, world-class wine community built on creativity and connection. Each visit offered new ideas, new flavors, and fresh inspiration to bring back to our own tasting room and winemaking process.
We’re excited to keep exploring, learning, and sharing that passion with our guests here at Wilson Estate Vineyards. After all, great wine begins with curiosity—and a willingness to keep discovering what makes Michigan wine so special.
